St Mary Magdalene's has been at the heart of Dundee for over a century — a place of worship, celebration, and community. We now face urgent repair work to protect our beautiful church and her stained glass. Please support our appeal and help us care for this special place.
Friends of St Mary Magdalene's – We Need Your Help
To all friends of St Mary Magdalene's Episcopal Church, Dundee - whether you've worshipped here, been baptised or married beneath our beautiful stained glass, joined us for a concert or one of our famous Summer or Christmas Fayres, or simply admired our church while passing by – we are reaching out to you.
Our beloved church has stood at the heart of this community for generations. She has been a place of welcome, prayer, music, laughter, and comfort for so many, and now she needs our care in return.
Over the past few months, we've worked hard to make St Mary Magdalene's wind and watertight. Thanks to generous support, we've been able to:
- Install a brand-new flat roof at the back of the church
- Repair numerous loose and missing slates and gutters
- Have a glazier restore the high stained-glass window cover and the window above the organ – stopping the dust that was falling into the pipes!
But as with all old and cherished buildings, each repair reveals the next challenge. A recent free drone survey has shown loose masonry around a high window, which poses a real risk to the beautiful stained glass behind it. We also discovered cracked and broken panes on the north side of the church, all needing specialist attention and scaffolding.
While the scaffolding is in place, we plan to:
- Secure and cover all windows with shatterproof polycarbonate to prevent future damage
- Clean, repair, and pressure-test the gutters
- Replace damaged slates to keep the roof sound for years to come
The total cost of this essential work is expected to exceed £20,000. It's a daunting figure for our small congregation, but we believe St Mary Magdalene's is worth every penny. She has served Dundee faithfully for over a century, and we, her current custodians, are determined to preserve her for future generations.
